Uganda Safari Frequently Asked Questions

1. How do I book a gorilla trekking permit in Uganda?

Gorilla permits must be booked through a licensed tour operator like our team at PawMac Safaris or directly with the Uganda Wildlife Authority. Due to high demand, we handle this process for our guests and recommend booking 3-6 months in advance.

2. What is the best time for a safari in Uganda?

From our experience operating tours, the best time is during the dry seasons: June to August and December to February. This is when wildlife gathers around water sources, and the trekking trails we use are less slippery.

3. How much does a typical Uganda safari cost?

A mid-range 3-day gorilla trekking safari with us typically starts from $1,200 - $1,500 per person. This includes the $800 permit fee, transport in our 4x4 vehicles, accommodation, and our expert guide services.

4. What should I pack for gorilla trekking?

We always advise our guests to pack sturdy hiking boots, long-sleeved shirts, trousers, gardening gloves (to protect against nettles), a reliable raincoat, insect repellent, and plenty of water.

5. Do I need a visa to visit Uganda?

Most international visitors require a visa. You can apply for an E-visa online before arrival. If you are visiting neighboring countries with us, the East Africa Tourist Visa is a great option.

6. Is Uganda safe for international tourists?

Yes, Uganda is very safe. Tourism is well-regulated, and national parks are patrolled by dedicated rangers. As local guides, we can personally attest to the incredible hospitality of Ugandans.

7. Are children allowed on gorilla trekking tours?

The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Uganda is 15 years old. This is strictly enforced by the Uganda Wildlife Authority for safety and conservation reasons.

8. What wildlife can I see on a Uganda safari?

Uganda is incredibly biodiverse. On our tours, you can see mountain gorillas, chimpanzees, tree-climbing lions (especially in the Ishasha sector), elephants, leopards, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, rhinos (at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary), and over 1,000 bird species.

9. How long does a gorilla trek take?

The duration of a gorilla trek is unpredictable and depends on the location and movement of the gorilla family. It typically takes anywhere from 2 to 6 hours. Once our trackers locate the gorillas, you are allowed exactly one hour to observe them.
